How to Choose the Right Prop Firm — 7 Things to Check Before You Buy

How to Choose the Right Prop Firm: 7 Non-Negotiable Checks

The prop firm industry has grown massively — and with that growth has come a wave of new, unproven firms competing for your challenge fee. Some are excellent. Some will hold your payouts, change their rules mid-challenge, or disappear entirely. Knowing how to separate the trustworthy from the risky is one of the most valuable skills in funded trading.

Here are the seven things every trader should check before handing over money to a prop firm.

Main Content — 5 Methods

1. Payout History — The Most Important Check

Before anything else, search the firm's name plus 'withdrawal proof', 'payout refused', 'rule change' on Reddit, Trustpilot and prop trading forums. A trustworthy firm will have hundreds of verified payout screenshots. A risky firm will have consistent complaints about delayed or denied withdrawals. FTMO, FundingPips and FundedNext all have strong, verifiable payout histories.

2. How Long Have They Been Operating?

Longevity matters enormously in prop trading. A firm that's been paying traders consistently for 3+ years is a far safer bet than one that launched 6 months ago with aggressive marketing. FTMO (2015) and Topstep (2012) are the benchmarks. Be especially cautious with any firm under 18 months old offering unusually high profit splits.

3. Are the Rules Clear and Stable?

Read the firm's trading rules carefully — and check whether they've changed their rules retroactively in the past. Any firm that has been caught changing rules after traders placed their trades is a red flag. All Vault-reviewed firms publish clear, stable rule sets that don't change without advance notice.

4. What's the Real Cost?

Some firms advertise low headline prices but charge reset fees, scaling fees, or monthly maintenance fees once you're funded. Calculate the true total cost before committing. And always check whether a Vault discount code is available — saving 10–15% upfront is always worth doing.

5–7. Community, Support, and Instruments
  • 5. Community: Large, active Discord and Reddit communities signal a trustworthy firm. Firms with silenced or controlled communities are a warning sign.
  • 6. Support quality: Test their support before you pay. Send a question and measure response time and quality. FTMO and FundedNext both have strong support reputations.
  • 7. Instruments: Make sure the firm supports the pairs and markets your strategy trades. A forex strategy won't transfer to a futures-only firm like Topstep.
